JANE FORTUNE LPC
I have been in the field of counseling for over 30 years and am now fortunate enough to offer services in Myrtle Beach, SC.
A licensed professional counselor, I received my Master’s Degree from Liberty University, in Lynchburg, VA in 2003. I completed a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Carolina University (WCU), in Cullowhee, NC, in 1973.
I worked in the field of human services after graduation from WCU, with breaks to raise my family. Early in my career I worked with adults as a vocational evaluator and counselor.
While completing my Master’s degree I worked as an Employee Assistant Counselor (EAP), and family counselor providing therapy in the home. During residency working towards licensure I continued with EAP Counseling, in-home family therapy and outpatient counseling.
My counseling style is greatly Influenced by my own life experiences (my marriage of close to 40 years - to the same man, two grown daughters, their husbands and eight grandchildren), as well as professional experiences that include working with families in the home and office.
"My husband and I were on the path to destruction with our marriage. We were both heavy drinkers, fought all of the time and had no respect for each other. We were on the brink of divorcing and my husband had already moved out. We started going to Jane as a last ditch effort and neither one of us wanted to hear that our drinking was a major factor. Jane didn't think our marriage going to make it though she didn't say that at the time. With her help, we both decided to concentrate on ourselves and our teenage son and if the marriage worked, so be it. I was the first to quit drinking. I knew from past experiences with alcohol that it just was not my friend and was in no way helping me or my son. My husband quit a few months later. We slowly worked on our own issues and then our marriage issues and here we are a few years later-still sober, still married and happy for the first time in years. Jane helped us get here. Thank you Jane!"
Never giving therapy a chance as an adult, I was skeptical going into my first appointment with Jane. Within the first few minutes, I felt as comfortable speaking with her as I would with a close friend or family member. She maintains a casual atmosphere, yet is very professional in her work. My time with her was brief, due to moving out of state. However, she gave me great tools and life skills to take with me and last a lifetime.
I love working with Jane because she makes you feel instantly comfortable. Appointments with her feel more like talking to an old friend over a cup of coffee, versus talking to a "counselor". She uses examples from her own life experiences to relate to what you are going through, while still providing professional tools and exercises that help combat stress in daily life. For years I have suffered from worry and anxiety, primarily due to a heart arrhythmia. These worries really began to affect my quality of life. Through working with Jane, I have learned to better manage my stress, and consequently the symptoms associated with my heart condition have virtually disappeared! My life has greatly improved, and I am a better wife and mother, thanks to Jane!
